That's pretty much what I do. I just think of rhymes and piece them together.

I usually just pick a beat and listen to it over and over. I write bars while I do it then when I have a few bars down I record it right quick to see if it sounds right. If it does, I keep going, if it doesn't I either count syllables and try to fix it or start over. Another thing I do is if I have a strong emotion I just write bars and it helps me cope. Then, I come back to what I wrote later and try to fix it up.
